Otherworldly, Ethereal and dynamic abstracted landscapes in oil
Using the landscape as a metaphor, these works take the viewer on a journey through swirling mists, organic forms and iridescent skies.
Painted with brushes and palette knives, these oil paintings capture light and movement, while maintaining a dynamic and dramatic atmosphere. They are meditations created to evoke a connectedness to the ethereal and transitory existence of the human experience within nature, through an otherworldly realm of shifting reality.

Surreal oil paintings
This series of surreal oil paintings explores the embodiment of nature through human and animal forms.
These works make full use of negative space and restricted colour schemes to create intriguing and powerful images. The intention is to create symbolic links with the natural world and it's inhabitants, whether human beings or animals, into a unified visual language.
These paintings are metaphorical images exploring the universal connections of life, within the landscape of the natural world.

Old Master Inspired Fantasy Oil Paintings
These series of fantastical & surreal figurative works, weave together themes of mythology, science fiction, esoterica and the occult into old master inspired fantasy dreamscapes.
They represent something ancient and modern, drawing inspiration from the renaissance and baroque periods.
The method used requires an underpainting in earth tones with translucent layers of oils to build the overall colour scheme. Details are added and refined as the work progresses.

This series started in the Spring of 2021 revisits the relationship between the female archetype and nature, as started in the human nature series of drawings.
These works symbolise the human as landscape and connected through the apparitions of mythological goddesses.
The works combine many techniques, combining the figurative and abstract elements of my painting style.

Old Master Inspired Fantasy Oil Paintings
Incorporating animal human hybrid creatures and surreal figurative apparitions, these oil on canvas works, symbolise Pauls interest in a wide range of Western and non-Western mystical and esoteric traditions.
This ongoing series started in the autumn of 2020, investigates magical and animistic faiths and how they are connected to nature, including the relationship between the human, plant and animal worlds.
Using a traditional painting method of underpainting and glazing, the compositions give a modern twist to what appear to be, on first inspection, dark fairy tales.
The Mechanical Paradise : 2020 - 2021
Old Master Inspired Fantasy Oil Paintings
Conceived as a reflection to the significance to the times we are living in “The Mechanical Paradise” is a series of oil paintings that symbolically combine ancient myths with the ongoing integration of AI (artificial intelligence) into contemporary life.
These works use methods that require an underpainting and transparent glazes of oil paint. I use a mix of raw and burnt umber with titanium white for the under painting and then various transparent and semi transparent oil colours, mixed with a medium to create the coloured glazes.
Planets : 2019
The paintings in the “Aether Worlds” series evolved into another collection, derived from photos of the works.
By creating a circle around details, I formed eighteen planets from the Aether Worlds original paintings.
All of the planets are named loosely after classical mythology, forming an imaginary solar system of nine inner and nine outer planets.

Many of these drawings were the basis for my oil painting series “Natura Forma”, and I think that drawing forms the basis for so many other methods of creating imagery, even abstract work.

"SPACETOURS 3000" journeys into outer space, meeting the strange inhabitants of a universe teeming with life.
Human tourists explore the universe, using pulse powered jet packs, observing other lifeforms like some gigantic galactic safari park…
Using a digital pen & tablet, a framework is digitally drawn in exquisite detail and then meticulously coloured, to create the finished artwork.

Drawing inspiration from mythology and symbolism, these animal headed hybrids and dead beat fashionistas mix humans with paganistic totemism and skeletal decadence, resulting in a highly stylised ultra modern icon.
Using a digital pen & tablet, a framework is digitally drawn in exquisite detail and then meticulously coloured, to create the finished artwork. The original line drawing in these works is very detailed, ensuring that I can build the texture, light and shade, creating the illusion of a 3 dimensional figure.
