I initiated a new series of oil paintings, just as the London lockdown started in spring of 2020.
"The Mechanical Paradise" uses techniques derived from the old masters to create these surreal faces, combining heads with elaborate clockwork mechanisms and AI.
I was able to concentrate on developing this new technique during the strange reality of the lockdown, which enabled me plenty of time to focus in the studio. This technique involves creating an underpainting of raw umber, transparent oxide red and white oil paint. It is like drawing with the paint to map out and refine the overall composition and then glazing further transparent colours to create the finished work.
